Fun fact, did you know sea otters actually hold hands to prevent themselves and others from drifting off?

Apart from being super cute, otters have a huuuuge importance in our ecosystem. They are known as “keystone” species; their well-being is often an indicator of the health of their entire habitat. So by protecting otters, we’re also protecting our rivers, our wetlands, and numerous other species that share their habitat.

Happy #worldturtleday ... I didn't know this was a thing until @cuddlycactusbooks recent post - thank you so much! And thank you to @tortoiserescue for starting it and raising awareness of the challenges facing these creatures everyday.

I was a bit sad I hadn't done a recent turtle drawing recently until I remembered this little background character I did in a #mermay illustration I've been working on in my free time. This is just work in progress - more to follow soon from this piece.

Here are some buzzing facts about bees

🐝 A single bee can produce 1 tablespoon of honey in its lifetime.

🐝 Bees can fly up to 12 mph.

🐝 Bees heat and cool their own hive to keep it between 93 and 95 degrees year-round.

🐝 A Queen Bee will lay 800,000 eggs in her lifetime!

🐝 The hexagonal shape of the honeycomb is the most efficient shape in our world.

🐝 One out of every three mouthfuls of our food depends on pollinators such as bees.

🐝 You can help bees out by planting more wild native flowers, not using pesticides and giving the lawn mower a break for a while.

Valerie the vampire mermaid and Neil the eel setting off to the deep-water Day-Glo disco.

  Being a kids book illustrator I wasn’t going to attempt the #horror prompt for #day15 of the #mermaychallenge but then I thought let’s give it a whirl (not that this is exactly what I would call scary).

  I also found out some really cool facts about Vampire Squids: 
🐙 Their name - Vampyroteuthis infernalis literally means 'vampire squid from hell'
🐙 They don’t suck blood.
🐙 They aren’t even predators.
🐙 Actually, they’re the only cephalopod that are scavengers not predators.
🐙 Also, they aren't squids.
🐙 They are more closely related to the octopus.
🐙 They eat sea dandruff (sea snow)…which is really just detritus.
🐙 They do not ink.
🐙 The tips of its tentacles can glow and also emit a cloud of bioluminescent sticky mucus that glows for up to 10 minutes.
🐙 Proportionally speaking, a vampire squid's eyes are the largest in the animal kingdom
